Cross “Merchandising” for Libraries: by Kathryn Lynip

Adult Nonfiction post—02/27/09
As a former bookstore worker, I enjoy creating displays to draw attention to parts of the collection. In this blog, I hope to share my observations from the retail market to benefit public libraries. Cross merchandising can be a great addition to displays, especially for libraries with multiple floors. Including children’s books, video and music on the same display draws attention to many areas of the library, and encourages patrons to pick up several items.
Tip of the Month: For smaller libraries that don’t have a lot of titles to circulate: Laminate a copy of the cover scan to put behind the book, CD, or DVD so that interested parties can place a hold on the item after display copies have been checked out. If you can provide the front and back of the book the display will remain completely intact.
Movie Tie–Ins for Teens: by Heather Ji

Young Adult post—02/27/09
Lori previously talked about upcoming movies based on children’s books and now I’m going to point out some upcoming films based on books or graphic novels that will appeal to teens. Keep in mind that some of these films may be rated “R,” and a few of the tie–ins are adult books. I’m sure everyone is gearing up for Watchmen in March, and teens will want to read the influential graphic novel. Other films based on graphic novels and comics include X-Men Origins: Wolverine starring Hugh Jackman, Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li, Dragonball Evolution, and Scott Pilgrim vs. the World starring Michael Cera. The talented Mr. Cera is also in Youth in Revolt, based on the novel of the same name, and though the buzz from Twilight has hardly died down, Stephenie Meyer returns in November with New Moon.
SXSW Music and Media Conference: by Trisha Rigsby

Music post—02/27/09
The South by Southwest (SXSW) Music and Media Conference is a huge event and I’m very excited to be going this year. Bands and industry professionals from all over the world travel to Austin, Texas, every March to attend panels, exhibits, and shows. Acts span all contemporary music genres and range from signed and established bands to the unknown and/or unsigned. Last year, Bon Iver, Fleet Foxes and Vampire Weekend generated the most buzz, and all of these previously unknown bands went on to have success in 2008. Performers at SXSW 2009 include Tori Amos, Katy Perry, Indigo Girls, The Decemberists, Andrew Bird, The Hold Steady, M. Ward, BeauSoleil, Raul Malo, Ben Harper and the Relentless 7, 8ball & MJG, Anberlin, Laura Gibson, and Lila Downs. Quincy Jones is this year’s keynote speaker; the Oak Ridge Boys, Steven Van Zandt, and Devo will also be speaking. I can’t wait to see what new artists are discovered this year!
This month, we sit down with Mike Richardson
Mike Richardson founded Dark Horse Comics in 1986 as an offshoot of his Oregon comic-book retail chain, Things From Another World. Richardson pursued the idea of establishing an ideal atmosphere for creative professionals, and 25 years later the company has grown to become the third-largest comics publisher in the United States.
